Lettering with the Masters :: Carol DuBosch, May

This year-long lettering journey is inspired by a different master each month. With a sneak-peek into their studios and practices, we will have the opportunity to learn how those working as visual practitioners, calligraphers, and graffiti artists use the same tools we use—and introduce us to new ones—to make letters. So grab your markers and let’s go!

MAY MASTER

Carol DuBosch has been a calligrapher in Portland, Oregon since she was first introduced to nibs and ink in 1959 as a high school art student. In the 58 years since, she has gained a degree in Graphic Design and studied with every major calligrapher in the US and Europe. Carol has been teaching college level and private classes in the Northwest along with workshops throughout the United States and most recently in Italy. She has directed three International Calligraphy Conferences in Portland, bringing 500 scribes together for a week of studying and sharing.

NOTE: THIS IS A SINGLE SESSION

In this 1-hour session, Carol goes step-by-step teaching us monoline Uncial and continues on to share how to write with a broad-edge pen and how that translates to Neuland Markers. She also shared how the folded pen is like the brush tip marker and several creative tips like writing with bleach and creating guidelines on dark paper.

Also included:

• Uncial exemplar including guidelines for practice

• Five pages of demo notes from the session

Please be patient as the PDFs and video downloads. It may take a few minutes.
