Lettering with the Masters :: Max Gibbons, February session
This year-long lettering journey is inspired by a different master each month. With a sneak-peek into their studios and practices, we will have the opportunity to learn how those working as visual practitioners, calligraphers, and graffiti artists use the same tools we use—and introduce us to new ones—to make letters. So grab your markers and let’s go!
FEBRUARY MASTER
Max Gibbons is an artist and teacher who combines his 10-years of graffiti writing experience with a passion for traditional calligraphy techniques. He practices ‘calligraffiti’, a term coined by artist Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman, and is inspired by the kinetic motion of graffiti tagging along with Fraktur and Gothic typefaces and illuminated manuscripts. Max’s work has been featured in galleries, in print and digital publications, and on walls in throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and occasionally posts on Instagram @maxgibbonsletteringNOTE: THIS IS A SINGLE SESSION
This 1 hour, 50-minute session covers Max's approach and insights to how he creates:
• Graffiti letterforms
• Calligraffiti compositions
• Using a variety of broad-edge mark-making tools
And what a bonus that he shares his slap/sticker collection with us!
Also included is 10 pages of demo notes. Please be patient as it downloads. It may take a few minutes.
